With its Mission Style clubhouse overlooking the surrounding St. Inez Mountains and verdant Santa Barbara landscape, La Cumbre which was originally designed by Tom Bendelow with revisions by George Thomas & Billy Bell in 1925 is a very stylish club that is home to one of the more under-rated courses in Southern California. I was fortunate to take the Yale Golf Team there in March--courtesy of Outpost Club past Captain Jim Perry--and we were treated to a very memorable and enjoyable course that flows through a series of elevation changes and among stately live oaks and massive eucalyptus trees. The jagged, well-placed bunkers retain the quintessential “Thomas look” and the turf condition of the fairways and greens was the finest we experienced on the entire 10 day spring trip. (Colin Sheehan, Yale Golf Coach and Co-Founder of the Outpost Club, 4/24/17)
An Inspiring combination of challenge and beauty, this course brings players to the edge of the Pacific Ocean. With breathtaking views in all directions, Sandpiper is truly a memorable experience. Always ranked among the very best public access courses in California, Sandpiper, designed by renowned west coast architect William F. Bell, opened in 1972 features rolling fairways on a very picturesque seaside layout.
Measuring over 7,000 yards from the back tees with a course rating of 75.1, Sandpiper has challenged the abilities of the PGA and LPGA players alike, playing host to several professional tournaments including: The PGA Tour Tournament Players Series, The LPGA Tour Santa Barbara Women's Open, and the prestigious final stage of the PGA Tour Qualifying school. Sandpiper combines traditional championship golf with spectacular surroundings to provide players with an incredible golf experience. (From Quentin Lutz, Co-Founder of the OC and GOLF Magazine Top 100 Panelist).
Nestled between the shrub-covered slopes of the Santa Ynez Mountains and the clear blue shores of the Pacific Ocean, Santa Barbara is California at its best. Santa Barbara is arguably one of the most beautiful towns in California, with lovely Spanish style architecture, an inviting waterfront, and a mountainous backdrop. Santa Barbara has been called the "American Riviera" -- with a twist. Accommodations in Santa Barbara come in a variety of types and price points — Spanish Colonial-style bungalow, luxury resort, contemporary hotel, affordable motel rooms, neighborhood inns, or beachside camping spot. The inaugural Society Cup was held in September of 2015 over various Pinehurst courses including Pinehurst No.2 and and Mid Pines. Eight teams from golf societies from the US and England competed over three days for the unique four-handled trophy. The team from the Lowcountry Port Society came out on top (B. Davis, W.Smith, C. Murray & J. Malinay) but more importantly all of the teams celebrated the wonderful game of golf. In 2016, the Lowcountry Port Society was able to defend their title at Saucon Valley despite switching out two members of the team (I. Blinoff in for W. Smith and J. Spencer in for B. Davis)
